Class ideas about Vocabulary Strategies (in-class discussion on Sept. 18)
Here are your ideas about how to learn vocabulary effectively and efficiently. My comments/ideas are in green.
- Make a note of a few new vocabulary items every day
- Keep on repeating them
- Get someone to quiz you on them: dictation/spelling, etc.
- Carry a small notepad with you at all times. Write down new words you see throughout you day. (Bring new words/phrases to class if you want to discuss them)
- Find new words, write them down, and repeat them until the word sticks in your mind
- Try to use new words as often as you can.
- Try to use new words in your daily life; use your vocabulary when you are talking.
- Try to learn 10 new words every day. Memorize them.
- When you find a word that you don't know, do not look the word up in your mother language; instead, find the meaning of the word in an English dictionary.
- Find the synonym of the word (and antonym, and collocations)
- Use flash cards
- Learn phrases, not just individual words
- Read and write to expand your knowledge of new vocabulary
- Keep new vocabulary in a notebook (or a section of your binder) for reference.
- Use a dictionary (English to English) or repeat a lot
- Use the Internet for the correct meaning
- Watch movies and read books, newspaper articles, etc.
