This online reading practice, "Reading For Understanding".

What do good readers do?

During class on September 18th, you discussed your ideas about effective reading strategies and tips for becoming a better reader. Here are your ideas:
  • keep reading (any materials you can get)
    • read many types of books, magazines, and newspapers
    • read as much as you can in different subjects
  • don't be afraid of not understanding while you are reading
  • keep asking questions as you read
  • find some stories which make you more interested
    • love what you read
    • don't get bored
  • do not read only with your mind; watch out for any feelings/responses that you have as you read
  • skim: read quickly and get the main idea
    • see the main ideas and specific detail connected to the main idea
    • pick up important words but don't get stuck with vocabulary that you don't know
  • write a summary of the story
  • if you don't understand the story, you should read it again
  • connect what you read with what you already know
  • mark words and sentences that you don't understand and write them down on another paper to create your own vocabulary list/circle the words that you don't know
  • Read children's books (they are simple and easy to read)
What do you think of this list? Is there anything here that you don't agree with? Which strategies and tips will you focus on this term? Feel free to comment or ask a question in the comment box below!

  1. Thank you for writing all down here. I am not a book lover especially for the thick books or long story. I always skim them ( read first, some between and the last paragraph for result also caption). I do same for every article. Even I urge myself to finish a book, but....
Study was different and I put whole my energy and time to do so ( reading, take notes and revision). I hope I can achieve to this goal too ( be a good reader)

    1. Hi Kamelia,

I'm happy to see you posted a comment here! Thank you for your thoughts and ideas.

When we read for pleasure (also known as 'extensive reading'), it's important to choose a book that you are interested in and that is not too hard for your level. A good rule of thumb when choosing a book is to read the first page, and if there are more than 5 new words on that page, pick a book that is one level lower. This way, reading a short story or novel will not feel like an unpleasant chore.

    1. Hi Hilda! Good to hear from you. For extensive reading, remember to choose a book that is easy for you to read so it is enjoyable and somewhat relaxing. If a page of the book has more than 5 new words on it, then it is too difficult for extensive reading.

Enjoy the celebrations in Mexico..Day of the Dead, right? :)
